Dr Huichao Xie

About Me
Dr. Huichao Xie is an Assistant Professor in Education at University College Dublin researching and teaching on early childhood special and inclusive education. Huichao received her Ph.D. in Special Education with an expertise in early intervention/early childhood special education from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, United States.
Her scholarship is focused on developing and evaluating culturally sensitive assessment practices and interventions to support the diverse needs of young children (birth to 8 years of age) experiencing environmental and/or biological risk factors which may impact their development. she is particularly interested in engaging and empowering family members in early identification and intervention for atypical developmental needs. Before joining UCD, Huichao served as an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Education of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where she was the Principal Investigator in three grant projects and received an Research Excellence Award in 2022.
Dr. Xie's teaching focuses on inclusive education, particularly in early childhood. Before starting a career in academic, Huichao has five years of experiences as a licensed teacher in various early childhood education settings in both China and the U.S. She has a passion for early childhood educator professional development and application of evidence-based practices in making preschool classrooms a nurturing and inclusive environment for every child and family.
Beyond research and teaching, Huichao has been active in providing services to the community. She served on the judge panel for Singapore government's Teacher Award in 2021 and 2022 and on the consultant panel for Singapore government's Special Education Syllabus Development. She also serves on the consultant panel for UNICEF China in the Preschool Inclusion Initiative Project from 2022 to 2025. She is the Associate Editor for journal Pedagogies: An International Journal and serves on the editorial board for two other academic journals.
